Wordpress theme editing. I haven't used wordpress in a really long time. I learned how to edit the css in a wordpress theme and generally what the difference in a post and a page is.
I had some trouble with understanding the nature of a post vs a page and how the posts will automatically appear and act.
I added a plugin 'Advanced post block' to the home page. This allowed a lot of intuitive styling for the posts to show up on the homepage.
I would love to spend some more time on using the editor now that I'm more familiar with it. I'd like to turn up the css edits and explore plugins a little more. I'd see what can be accomplished with more of a need to pull data from another site, like a Threads feed.
WooCommerce plugin exploration. This was simultaneously easier and more difficult than I thought it would be. I used the content from my New Media Design class to fill it out and the options for commerce post styles/types really intrigued me.
It took me a really long time to realize WooCommerce had a sidebar widget built in. I was looking in the wrong place trying to disable the widgets within the theme, vs what was imported with WooCommerce.
I started with this site vs. the content site and this one was so difficult to get organized. There was a learning curve with wordpress in general so I'm proud that everything is functioning pretty well.
I'd like to spend more time with the commerce elements. There are so many styles of commerce posts, I'd like to explore different items to be sold and ways to style each in the most efficient way.
I learned that the bootstrap component "cards" is what I wanted to do instead of the accordian for the last project and the bootstrap grid system is the best way to implement this. I think I learned more in this project about how much I do not understand.
Where to begin. First, I had a lot going on personally this week and did not get to spend the time on this project that it deserved. For panel one I spent time making vectors in illustrator that I hoped I could turn into icons for the other panels but I could barely cahnge anything on the template I chose. Becuase I was pressed for time, I had to just do what I could in the time that I had left. I need to set a meeting this time to see where I went wrong. The third panel doesn't have very much cahnged because I could not figure out how to change more than I did. I may have picked a template with way too much styling. I tried a lot of things in the ways in which we're supposed to change them, but it seemed like there were so many styles applied to each element I was having a hard time figuring out what to target. Outside of that, I am learning it is better to heavily indent all code, especially with divs. Div's within divs can get very confusing very quickly.
I'm really not proud of very much with this project. I was very overwhelemd and confused so I did what I could with the template I chose. I'm wondering if that was just it, I chose a template with so much going on it was more content that I didn't understand, than I did understand.
Where I went wrong with this project for one thing. I will be reaching out to talk about it. I'm honeslty embarassed.
Basically all of them. In this project, everything was a new experience for me since my previous experience with the web was so long ago. All the CSS was a whole new experience so attempting some qualitative elements was quite a challenge.
I really thought using the fontawesome icons would be easier. I had some struggles with that. I simply don't know enough vocabulary to know if what I wanted to do is possible. Most of my struggles were due to me being a little too ambitious.
I'm proud of all of it honestly. I'm "over the hump" of understanding for many things. When I started this course I had terrible task paralysis getting started in this overwhelming skill of coding. My first few FreeCodeCamp assignments were very difficult for me. After the first two, I started to understand the concepts more. Now I can see that I was making it more complicated than it needed to be. Each step of the way I'm just figuring it out one piece at a time. One of my proudest achievements for this project is the collapsible list on page two. I initially wanted each 'observable' to have a fontawesome icon or an image adjacent somehow, but I could not figure out how to do either. I think that's why I added the footer at the bottom with the fontawesome icons; I couldn't let the icons beat me.
I want to learn everything! I understand that this is an intro class. However, I'm so excited to to be writing any sort of code I want to learn all I can. I'm slowly understanding how it all works, different terminologies and the functions of different languages, etc. I work on a marketing team with three web designers and I would like to know everything they know. Being the graphic designer on the team, the idea of not having to ask for help seems to good to be true. The more I learn the more I see how little I do know so it doesn't seem like there's an end to what is possible which is exciting!
